My worst haircut experience.

I had my worst haircut ever since I started going the barber saloon to get a haircut myself.

Let me explain; So based on the way I was feeling over the weekend(not particularly great), I decided to get a haircut(my hair was making me look rough anyway). To me, getting a fresh haircut had always been a way to give myself a fresh start.

I had relocated recently to a new area and as a result I was yet to get a stable barber. In the last few weeks, I had tried quite a few of them and to my dismay, they have below your average everyday barber with no extras. For men, choosing ‘the’ barber is like selecting a perfect spouse, so getting the perfect one has to always be a careful process.

Back to my story; since it was a weekend day, I took a stroll through the peaceful but not so-well laid out streets of Ilu-Abo(A community of around 11,000 residents)exchanging pleasantries with people here and there since i had become almost a celeb🤣 as i run a low-cost nursery and primary school. Though this was an opportunity to get to meet more residents, it was also a perfect opportunity to continue my search for a befitting barber who I can continually use his/her services since i needed a cut more or less bi-weekly.

As I walked past a mini-shopping complex with bright lights and loud music, I noticed an “Excellent Barber available here” sign in a corner. So I walked in hopeful that this was going to be “the one”. When the barber spotted me, he quickly slid his entrance door to the side to let me in with a huge smile plastered all over his face.

“Bro, you want Barb, abi?” in Pidgin English. Loosely translated to “Do you want a haircut?

I smiled and said Yes, I do.

He replied “You don come the right place” meaning you have come to the right place.

He quickly continued with a rundown of his resumè and how he had worked for years as a barber in hotels in Lagos(hoping to impress me with these stories). After the long talk, he ushered me to a seat and asked me how I wanted my hair. I gave him an in-depth description with lots of hand gestures to which he kept nodding.

As i sat there, he kept moving around gathering items for the haircut

like a devout student preparing for his final school exams. It took him around 3–6 minutes for him to settle into giving me a haircut. Just a minute into the haircut, the tone of Clipper suddenly changed to a shrill deafening noise that almost burst my eardrums. For a few odd minutes,he tried to battle the clipper to bring the sound back to its normal level to no avail then to my discomfort, he continued cutting my hair sweating profusely even with the fan on.

About 10 minutes passed in silence while he worked until he announced that he was done.

Lo and behold, when I looked in the mirror afterward, my hair had shaved my head bald and my beard; given an awkward shape.

The haircut after a day.

Am I ever going there again? Maybe not!
